That may as well be Emory’s slogan.
Last night, after significant digging into the situation, I realized that my financial situation was not nearly so dire as I had originally thought. (The smaller than expected loan check was caused by the automatic deduction of two months rent. So rather than 5 months rent yet to pay for, I have three.) That’s good news.
However, to keep my emotional state at a nice and level ambivalence, this morning I received an email from the housing office saying that, due to “need for academic expansion” on campus, three undergraduate dorms will be closed down. Their elegant solution for this is to kick out all the graduate students. We don’t have to leave right away, of course. We get to live out our leases here. But we cannot renew them for next year.
Of course, I didn’t want to renew my lease for next year, because it is ungodly expensive to live here, but I can only imagine what 471 grad students suddenly in need of housing is going to do to the rental market.
I can pretty well kiss any chance at a reasonably cheap nearby apartment goodbye.
Thanks a lot, Emory. That just makes my day.
sounds like fun! best advice: start looking early, might end up spending two month worth of rent for two places but at least you got something.

something to start with!
Yeah. I’m going to have to get an early start on this. Unfortunately.
Oh well, at least I have quite a bit of warning. And maybe some other grad students will have an idea on where most of us can live in some sort of proximity.
You know what the funniest thing is about the whole situation? Out of those apartments that you posted links for, not a single one is even in the ballpark of how expensive it is to live where I’m living now. They’re all significantly cheaper.
That’s a good thing.
