I’m all about the gay rights…in every way. Never have had a problem with that, and it strikes me as ridiculous that anyone would.
But this is just wrong, isn’t it?
“Out magazine, which claims to have the largest circulation of any gay-oriented publication, has placed CNN anchor Anderson Cooper and actress Jodie Foster on the cover of its current issue, which includes the magazine’s first Gay Power List. (The cover features two models holding paper cut-outs of Foster’s and Cooper’s faces over their own.) Neither has openly acknowledged that they are gay, although for some time they have been the subject of tabloid rumors about their sexual orientation. The online edition of Radar magazine quoted Out editor in chief Aaron Hicklin as saying, “It’s a bit of chutzpah on our part. … The A-list and even B-list gays are mostly in the closet still, and those are the kinds of people we need to have on our cover. This is a way of addressing that.” Neither Cooper nor Foster was available for comment.”
If you’re attempting to force someone out of the closet, when you (by definition) can’t know that they are, in fact, gay…that’s just innappropriate. By this logic, anyone who is in a position of power can simply be claimed by a gay magazine, forcing them into a position where they have to make the statement “I’m not gay.” This is just gay rights as tabloid garbage… You can’t wage a war without thinking about the collateral damage. That’s the mentality of a victim or George W. Bush…neither one of which I want to be.
It’s an abuse of power. I certainly hope that there’s some very careful and clever wording in the article itself (like “isn’t it funny that the most powerful ‘gays’ might not even be gay”), otherwise I’m quite offended.
I agree — it’s like *Out* decided to operate at the level of a hit-piece unauthorized biography.
i thought that the cover people had to be openly gay for that magazine. but i guess that got around that w/the cutouts of their faces. that’s just rude. and honestly, do we really need gay celebrities in order for the public to be more accepting of gays? that’s saying something sad about our society and the way we idolize celebrities.
and anderson cooper, gay or not, is still a damn good reason to watch cnn. i think he may’ve surpassed sam champion the ny abc weather guy. :)
