Until further notice, all DVD trading is suspended as my burner appears to have broken down. All of my last nine DAP dvds have come out unplayable.
Years ago I did the duplication circulation thing with Mystery Science Theater videos and wound up with the entire series on tape. I’ve decided, now that I have a shiny new DVD burner (finally) that it’s time to replace the tapes in a smaller (and less prone to disaster) format. So I’m looking to trade for the episodes that I do not currently have on DVD.
(I’ve decided to do this by trading because buying bootlegs is annoying and expensive. Downloading, now that the Digital Archive Project has finally upgraded to using torrents, is also a source but is only intermittently possible, as no one seeds the old releases.)
My ground rules:
- I will not buy episodes from you, nor will I sell them to you. I am strictly a trades only guy. When cash gets involved it A) stops being fun, and B) becomes even more legally questionable.
- I would prefer to only trade for episodes that are complete and in decent quality. If you send me a DVD of an episode with bad commercial cutting, missing stingers, jumpy picture, or which ’snows-out’ during explosions, I will not be pleased. What’s the point of trading if you’re going to have to replace the copy with a better one?
- Don’t bother sending cases or cover art, and don’t expect me to send those things. There’s no point. Everyone has their own style.
- If I’ve never traded with you before, start small. Don’t say “I’d like to trade for all the episodes you have” and expect me to believe that I’m actually going to receive anything from you.
Anyway, on to the lists.

The bulk of the season three episodes are DVD-Rs from the “cheepnis” tapes (one of the early well known tape traders), so all are very high quality, but they currently cannot be traded because my dvd recorder refuses to copy them. That is why they are not currently listed in red.
The red-listed episodes are almost all from the Digital Archive Project, and are all intact and good quality (if memory serves). However the quality can vary a bit depending on the source tape that was used to encode. Also, episodes 414 (since officially released) and 415 came from a tape that had the annoying “Comedy Central News Bites” crawl.
———
The following is a list of favorite episodes that I don’t currently have on DVD-R. If you have DVD-Rs of any of these in decent quality, then I will definitely trade for them. If you don’t have any of these, I’ll still likely trade anyway:
- K13 – SST Deathflight
- K16 – City on Fire
- K18 – Million Eyes of Su-Maru
- 107 – Robot Monster
- 110 – Robot Holocaust
- 113 – Black Scorpion
- 205 – Rocket Attack USA
- 422 – Day the Earth Froze
- 423 – Bride of the Monster
- 610 – The Violent Years
- 815 – Agent for HARM
- 818 – Devil Doll
- 819 – Invasion of the Neptune Men
I have these other rarities to offer in trade:
- a DVD featuring 61 Tex Avery cartoons from MGM (varying quality; it’s a compilation DVD of various rips and obviously, when there’s 61 cartoons on a disc, we’re talking VCD quality at best…)
- A DVD transfer of the unofficially blacklisted (for racism) Disney film “Song of the South.” Print quality appears to be that of a duplicated VHS tape. Watchable, but far from pristine. But a very rare film, especially if you don’t want to pay $400 for the Japanese laserdisc.
- Three DVDs of Abbas Kiarostami films not currently available in the US: “Where is the Friend’s House,” “Life and Nothing More,” and “Through the Olive Trees.” (Quality of prints are not the greatest. They appear to be transfers from professionally made videocassettes.)
- Eight DVDs from Japanese pop-auteur Sabu, none of which are currently available in the US (nor are they likely to ever be): “DANGAN Runner,” “Postman Blues,” “Unlucky Monkey,” “Monday,” “Blessing Bell,” “Hard Luck Hero,” “Dead Run,” and “Hold Up Down.”
- Joseph Losey’s brilliant ’sci-fi’ film “These are the Damned” (full screen transfer, unfortunately, but this is a very rare film). Sorry, but I apparently can’t trade this either. My software refuses to copy it. (The inability to copy about half of this stuff is just as irritating for me as it is for you, believe me…)
- “Earth Star Voyager,” the two part Disney made-for-tv movie from the 1980s. Original source is an off air tape, but quality is relatively good despite this fact. (It looks pretty good for a 20 year old, EP recorded tape.) This is two DVDs, so obviously two discs are required from you in exchange.
I’ll also trade for these non-MST items on DVD-R:
- The complete series of “Strange Luck”
- 1980s sci-fi tv series “Misfits of Science”
- telefilm “Comrades of Summer”
- Japanese baseball drama “I’ll Buy You” by director Masaki Kobayashi
- a functional copy of the Japanese film “Drive” by Sabu (I’ve already purchased two bootleg copies and neither one would play)
If you wish to trade, post your email and/or web address in the comments box below.
